Made in the USA!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Here at Little Green Star, we have a mission… to educate kids on the importance of science, nature, and protecting the environment. Not only do our tees reflect this message, but we think of our mission with everything we do from the paper we use in our office, to the inks on our tees and tags, to how we ship our products, and most importantly to the shirts that we use. I guess you can say we want to practice what we preach!!

So in order to be kind to the earth, we use shirts that are made from 100% organic cotton, which have been grown and sewn in the US. Even the organic lunch bags we carry are made in the US. I never knew I was such a patriotic person until I started a business of my own! It feels great to say that our little tees help support organic farms and manufacturers in the US.

So when you can, think local and think USA! If you have a choice between a big box store or your local farmers market, try out the farmers market! If you have a gift to buy, check out our SHOP page or Esty, for handmade and unique gifts! It helps keep your carbon footprint low and helps supports small businesses!

A Fall Visit to the Farmers Market

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Cooking has become a new activity in our house. Thankfully, my husband is a really good cook and he has been inspiring all of us to think of fun and new meals to make together. Cooking with the boys has really gotten them excited about eating and shopping for food! Especially when we go to the farmers market.

It is so important to shop local when you can, not only because you can get fresh and organic produce at fantastic prices, but you support a sustainable food system, keep small farms in business, and protect the environment since the food does not travel far from the source.

Here in San Francisco we are lucky to have many wonderful farmers markets, but according to the United States Department of Agruiculture, there are over 4,600 farmers markets in the US! Here is a great link to find a farmers market in your area!

RIght now there are so many wonderful in season fruits and veggies like brocolli, brussell sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, zuchinni, apples, pomegranates, and persimmons. There is no excuse not to pull out your cookbooks and come up with something wonderful! Enjoy!!

EnviroKidz=Yummy!

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

We eat a lot of cereal in our house and everyone has their favorite. While shopping at Trader Joe’s, a cute gorilla face grabbed the attention of my one year old, so we got some Gorilla Munch cereal from EnviroKidz. Its so good!! Tastes like Kix, remember that from when you were young? The only ingredients are organic corn meal, organic evaporated cane juice, and sea salt. Its low in sugar, but high on taste (oh my, did I just write that?!)! But its true!

In addition to the yummy varieties like Koala Crisp, Panda Puffs, and Amazon Frosted flakes, every box offers a story and ways for kids to help the environment. The Gorilla Munch cereal has a great story about Kureba the gorilla, a young Mountain gorilla who is on the endangered species list. Kids learn about the Gorilla Fund and 1% of the sales of Gorilla Munch goes to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, which helps protect the gorillas from poachers. Even the inside of the box has fun facts, stories, and info on how to adopt-a-gorilla!

There is even information about why organic ingredients are important like no pesticides, no additives, and how its production causes less soil erosion and less groundwater pollution. I mean, who doesn’t want to see the words “groundwater” while at the breakfast table, I love it!! :) Check out the EnviroKidz website too for coloring pages, links to endangered species foundations, and lots of pictures of animals with fun facts.

When you have kids, you just want to do your best to give them good food and teach them important lessons all the time (like learning about “soil erosion” at 7am!). Eating EnviroKidz cereal is one way to do that. They even have snack bars, cookies, and waffles too! Enjoy!

The Problem With Pesticides… and Why Little Green Star Uses Organic Cotton!

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

The use of pesticides has shown to contribute to food production (especially soybean and corn), other agricultural products (cotton), and disease eradication.  However, there are numerous undesirable impacts associated with pesticide use.  More specifically, pesticides impact public health, loss of natural enemies, and reduces pollination. We need food and fiber to live; however obtaining these items can be done sustainably by using best management practices in our farming.   These practices include crop rotation, organic farming, use of natural predators, and most importantly an Integrated Pest Management Plans.

Here is a short summary that  The O’Mama Report  lists ”A true organic farmer will follow natural growing practices as closely as possible. Organic foods are grown without the aid of unsafe and polluting chemicals. Instead of spraying crops with synthetic pesticides, the organic farmer can choose to plant varieties that are naturally more resistant to insects and disease, rely on beneficial insects, and use tillage practices that discourage pests. As a choice for fertilizer, the true organic farmer will use unrefined minerals obtained from natural deposits and organic sources of nitrogen found in animal manure or plant products. Organic farmers recycle waste matter into fertilizer, in keeping with another definition of the word “organic” - a whole cyclical, sustainable system.”

Check out the Organic Trade Association for great information on why to choose organic food and cotton.

Be A Kind Consumer

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

If you want to make good choices before going shopping, head over to Kindly Consumer, a great resource for ethical shopping. They have links for everything from clothing, office supplies, eco-living, pet supplies, eco-vacations, even “green” superstores (of course most of those are in the UK!) That is also the great thing, you’ll be introduced to products from around the world, as many of the companies are European or Australian. Kindly Consumer also has a wonderful resource for products that do not conduct animal testing.

I’m very happy that we are listed on this website under the Kids Section. We were so excited to be selected for this website and feel honored to be a part of such a great group of companies.

I have learned so much since starting Little Green Star, especially when it comes to what I buy or which products I use in our home. I will definitely use Kindly Consumers when making purchases, so I can feel good about the products we use.

teensygreen: think outside your playroom

Little Green Star has made another new, cyber friend named Stefani, founder of Teensy Green, a fabulous website devoted to green products for kids. Not only is a it a shoppers dream (I have a list a mile long of things I want!) but Teensy Green provides humor along with info on keeping your family safe, great shopping tips, weekend outing ideas, and all kinds of fun give-a-ways. Teensy Green also has great links to other sites for green living.

Teensy Green highlights unique products I haven’t seen anywhere else, which is why I can’t wait to see whats new! Plus, Stefani makes green living seem fun and “normal”. A lot of the products are all things we use everyday, just better. Which is how it should be, just a part of our lives, not something we should put off, but to make it happen now.

And we love Teensy Green for the wonderful write-up they did on Little Green Star! Thanks Stefani!!

So add Teensy Green to your daily reading and check it out today!
