How safe is your drinking water?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

I listened to a very interesting and scary interview today on Fresh Air on my local NPR station. Journalist Charles Duhigg is doing several articles for the New York Times about the safety of our drinking water and how safe drinking water regulations are not being enforced. As a terrible and scary example, farmers who have excess “waste” from cows, spray the waste on the ground, which in turn, goes into the drinking water wells near the farm causing many people to get sick.

I’m a Nature Lover

Monday, July 13th, 2009

One of my favorite places to visit is Muir Woods. Located about 12 miles north of San Francisco, Muir Woods was declared the 10th national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt on January 9, 1908. And quite the monument it is! Muir Woods is over 550 acres with over half of that covered in old growth Coast Redwood trees. The tallest tree is about 250 feet tall and the ages of the trees range from 500 to 800 years old!

You can hike around the main loop on a nice paved pathway, which is perfect for kids and strollers. Or you can be more adventurous and take the trails that lead to the Pacific Ocean. Whatever you choose to do, you will be in awe of the greenery that surrounds you. Because of the fog, the new growth (called burls) can be seen on almost every tree. These bright green sprouts of new trees are just waiting to shoot up! The green color of the new growth that covers the forest floor is amazing-something you’ve got to see for yourself!

We created our Nature Lover shirt with these very images in our minds. Its just so simple… we love nature! And kids do too! That is why no matter where you live, just get out and enjoy it!

Got Organic Milk?

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Organic milk is becoming more and more expensive everyday it seems, but I choose to make it part of our budget. There are few items I am sure to buy organic and milk is definitely one of them. Organic milk is produced without antibiotics, growth hormones, or pesticides. The cows are also allowed to roam free in pastures and generally eat an organic diet as well.

Organic farming also contributes to protecting the environment, buy maintaining soil fertility, keeping the water clean, and maintaining a diverse ecosystem. Organic farms strive for sustainability and by relying on crop rotation, organic farms can be productive during each season, which keeps the soil fertile.

There is much to learn about organic farming and we should be very grateful for what they do for all of us!!

Our “Powered by Organic Milk” shirt was one of our very first designs and is very special to us! Right now it is on sale for $12.00 since we have limited sizes left! Take advantage of this great deal!!

So drink up and drink organic!

Made in the USA!

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Here at Little Green Star, we have a mission… to educate kids on the importance of science, nature, and protecting the environment. Not only do our tees reflect this message, but we think of our mission with everything we do from the paper we use in our office, to the inks on our tees and tags, to how we ship our products, and most importantly to the shirts that we use. I guess you can say we want to practice what we preach!!

So in order to be kind to the earth, we use shirts that are made from 100% organic cotton, which have been grown and sewn in the US. Even the organic lunch bags we carry are made in the US. I never knew I was such a patriotic person until I started a business of my own! It feels great to say that our little tees help support organic farms and manufacturers in the US.

So when you can, think local and think USA! If you have a choice between a big box store or your local farmers market, try out the farmers market! If you have a gift to buy, check out our SHOP page or Esty, for handmade and unique gifts! It helps keep your carbon footprint low and helps supports small businesses!

Specializing in unique organic cotton shirts that inspire & educate your little star!

Two New Designs!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

We are so excited to have 2 new designs in our collection!

We knew we always wanted a turtle in the mix, but what weren’t sure what he should be doing. Our inspiration for our “With a Little Devotion You Can Save the Ocean” shirt came from reading an article about how there are so many plastic bags in the ocean and that turtles mistake the bags for jellyfish. Its so sad and seems so unfair to these beautiful animals that they should have to suffer for our terrible mistakes.

So we hope our turtle shirt inspires you to “have a little devotion” and to think first before tossing that plastic bag. We suggest that you bring your own bags to the store so you don’t end up with those plastic bags or be sure to bring them back to the store for recycling.

Our Future Explorer shirt is a very inspiring shirt and we are proud of it! We love the idea of teaching our kids to go their own direction, not stay with the crowd, and have their own path. We think our shirt can open up that dialogue with kids and teach them that anything is possible. Explore the earth! Explore the sky! Explore the library! Explore your room! Just have fun doing it!
