Thats a very good question Julie and I don't know that I know the complete answer!! You are correct, plastics numbered 3 (PVC) and 7 (a mix of stuff or polycarbonate) are really bad and those are the ones to avoid. The best thing to do is look for brands that specifically say PVC-Free or BPA-Free. In terms of cups or bottles, there are a lot of great brands out there to use Born-Free, glass bottles, and a new line of bottles called Green To Grow (we'll be doing a review of them soon!)

I've also found that while it seems painful to spend $15.00 on a Sigg cup, for example, I have not lost a single one! I seriously have not spent any money on cups since buying the boys their own Sigg cups because I'm so careful with them and make sure I have them before leaving the playground. With plastic cups, I lost them all the time! So for us, its been a great investment.

I'll start working on a new blog post with some info too, thanks Julie!!

In the mean time, here is a great link to the Green Guide with some info on the definitions of the types of plastics. http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/88-89/plasticsnumbers

Thanks for an informative post, and keep up the good work! I feel that it is important to support businesses that choose to build green so I try to patronize businesses that incorporate green practices. If you are ever in San Francisco's Financial District around lunch time check out Mixt Greens Restaurant, they have two locations that were built following the USGBC's guidelines for green building, they use compostable containers, and use local and seasonal ingredients. I hope to find more restaurants following these practices.

ok little green star...here's the topic of debate...

What plastic # is the best to drink from? i did some
research and found out that 3 and 7 are really
bad....1 and 2 are the best and release the least amt of
toxins. then my friend said that her research said
that the higher the number the less the plastic breaks
down...hence the safest. WHICH IS TRUE???

thanks,
the environmentally confused

I totally agree, organic is the way to go. When you can't get organic, I always buy local, which is organic. We have a huge veggie garden!! I forgot about this shirt...the Peas Out Eat Organic one- way cool too!!! (Erica, Braylynnes mommy- My Dad recycles more than your dad!)
